Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Jeju: A to Z (Gwakji Gwamul Beach
  • In a number of recent segments of Jeju A to Z, Todd Thacker has profiled beaches along the north coast, including Gimnyeong and Iho Tewoo Beach. Today, we go a bit further afield to the west… to the ever-popular Gwakji Gwamul Beach. Sand, surf, and especially space. These are some of the most attractive features of Jeju’s beaches. Of the dozens of popular -- and some less well-known -- sunny respites, Gwakji Gwamul Beach in Aewol-eup is particularly close to many people’s hearts. [Slug CG] One of Jeju’s largest family-friendly beaches For one, it is one of Jeju’s largest, most spacious, and family friendly beaches. During the summer season, on-hand are all the beachgoing amenities, including a playground and freshwater fountain for kids. For swimmers, lifeguards are on duty throughout the day. A nice selection of small restaurants and cafes are also nearby. [Slug CG] 'Yongcheonsu nocheontang’: traditional freshwater public bath But there is also one other amenity with an interesting twist that you might want to try. Gwakji boasts a traditional open-air, public fresh water bath so you can rinse off the seawater and sand. Known as "Yongcheonsu Nocheontang" (용천수 노천탕), there are separate pools for men and women set off in a structure built from blocks of Jeju’s black basalt rock. [Slug CG] Broccoli event at Gwakji Beach: July 30, 10 AM to 9 PM On Saturday July 30th, there will be the ninth in an annual special event featuring a local product of the region -- broccoli. Aewol grows nearly half of the island’s crop -- about 700 out of a total of 1,500 hectares. You’ll have the chance to stroll along batdam -- the traditional Jeju stone walls -- which border fields of this green crop. Visitors can taste and buy broccoli on the day from local farmers. Musical performances, fireworks, and more will also be on tap. [Slug CG] Todd Thacker So if you haven’t already, put Gwakji Beach on your list of summer destinations. And like mom always says: Eat your broccoli! Todd Thacker KCTV

  • Researchers project glut of mandarin oranges this year
  • Researchers project glut of mandarin oranges this year Province to assist growers in thinning out their crops Analysts project an oversupply of Jeju mandarin oranges this year, so the province will be providing assistance with thinning out the fruit at farms across the island. One organization or group will be paired with every mandarin farm that lacks sufficient workers to thin the fruit. The province will also encourage growers to work through a mentoring program to get rid of all substandard mandarins. Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services surveyed the fruit crop in May, and projected that this year’s harvest would be 100,000 tons higher than optimum.

  • EV Boom in China
  • China has emerged as one of the world’s top electric vehicle producers, backed by national subsidies and interested consumers. One of the companies is eyeing the Jeju market. Mike Balfour reports. China’s former leader, Deong Xiaoping, designated the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen as the first Special Economic Zone in 1980 in line with his economic reforms and open door policy. In the downtown area you can easily find electric sedans, buses and taxies. Most of them are produced by the BYD Auto, a Chinese automobile manufacturer based in Shenzhen. From 2000, the company began to supply batteries to phone manufacturers and then diversified to include electric vehicles in 2008. BYD Auto recorded the highest sales in the world last year. The E6, the flagship of the auto maker, can drive 400 kilometers per charge, which draws customers’ attention. This is the outcome of the Chinese government’s efforts to make Shenzhen the number one EV city. INTERVIEW Eagle Zhao / Representative, BYD Auto Buses make up only 10 percent of vehicles in Shenzhen, but they release 65 percent of the CO2 emissions. That’s why China is first replacing buses and taxis with EVs. A local taxi business owns 850 electric taxis. The business is benefiting from the Chinese government’s EV subsidies. Charging buildings have been constructed, which is a big help for EVs penetration into the automotive market. BYD Auto is now planning to expand into Jeju as well as the Korean market. INTERVIEW Eagle Zhao / Representative, BYD Auto Jeju is working on both getting more EVs on island roads and pursuing more renewable energy projects. We believe BYD Auto has a chance to be very successful on the island. The Chinese government is aiming at putting 5 million EVs on roads by 2020. [reporter] Mike Balfour BYD’s technology and perseverance, along with the national government’s full support are making a difference in China. Mike Balfour, KCTV

  • Coping With Climate Change
  • Turning to Arirang now, the effects of climate change are being felt in many parts of our lives. Here’s Lee Ji-won with a report on how people in various industries are attempting to adjust to our warming planet. Extreme weather events have been striking all parts of the globe... and scientists are making stronger links between climate change, global warming and extreme weather. But, its impacts don't end there. Climate change has important implications for nearly every aspect of life on Earth. [Interview] Shin Yong-he / Senior researcher, APEC Climate Center (Korean) "Climate change coming from global warming is expected to have a serious impact on the biodiversity of the ecosystem. Extreme weather conditions such as flood and drought are also increasing." [slug] Rice production expected to decrease Korea's Rural Development Administration predicts... rising temperatures will contribute to a roughly 14-percent drop in rice production by 2040, and about 40-percent by 2090. Korean farmers and rural organizations have been adjusting to the changes through research on different kinds of grains and inventing new methods of transplantation and fertilization. [Interview] Heo Tae-ho / Farmer (Korean) "The climate in the southern region is changing to that of the sub-tropics. Different types of rice that can be harvested within nine to ten days were recently developed as well." The average temperature of the seawater around the Korean Peninsula has been rising in the last few decades... increasing 1-point-2 degrees Celsius in the span of 46 years. A change of a single degree in seawater corresponds to a difference of ten degrees on Earth. [slug] Seaweed harvest, pollock catch dropping Harvesting seaweed usually takes place in the winter... but warmer seawater has created an unfavorable environment. Between 1997 and 2004, roughly 24-hundred hectares of seaweed culture area disappeared. Marine institutes and government organizations have been making various efforts such as releasing fish eggs and imposing restrictions on catch to bring back the pollock population. [CAMERA] Park Tae-yeul But some experts say there is only so much humans can do to minimize the impact of climate change. [Interview] Im Yang-jae / National Fisheries Research & Development Institute (Korean) "Climate change is something that is happening on a global scale... and the variables humans can control to minimize the effect of it on the sea are so small. We can only study how marine organisms respond to such changes." [REPORTER] Lee Ji-won "Climate change is a global problem that concerns every nation, region, and individual... and its impacts becoming more profound and pronounced in our daily lives, industries... on our dinner tables. Lee Ji-won, Arirang News."
