'I will work to develop infrastructure in Jeju’
Prime minister announces support during Friday meeting

Prime Minister (황교안) Hwang Kyo-ahn has expressed his intention to push ahead with national-level improvements to Jeju’s infrastructure, including waterworks and other facilities.

The comments were made at a Friday national government meeting in Seoul as officials commemorated Jeju’s 10th anniversary of semi-autonomy.

Hwang said he would work to make Jeju a center of eco-friendly renewable industries by investing in electric vehicles and the development of clean energy on the island.

But he also noted the possible side effects of rapid development, saying efforts would be made to resolve issues regarding traffic, housing and the environment.

Jeju Governor Won Heeryong - who was also in attendance at the meeting - is said to have discussed receiving financial support for various projects, including the development of Jeju into a global environmental city, the creation of more public parks, improvements to infrastructure, and the transfer to the province of many rights now held by national authorities.

황총리, "제주 인프라 확충·생활환경 개선"

황교안 국무총리가 제주의 인프라를 확충하고 택지나 상하수도망과 같은 생활환경의 대폭 개선의지를 밝혔습니다.

황 총리는 오늘 오전 정부서울청사에서 제주특별자치도 출범 10주년을 맞아 열린 제주도 지원위원회 회의에서 이같이 말했습니다.

특히 전기차와 청정에너지 발전 등에 대한 과감한 투자와 지속적인 규제개혁을 통해 친환경 신산업의 중심지로 육성하겠다고 강조했습니다.

다만 단기간내 급속한 성장과 개발과정에서 교통과 주거, 환경문제 등이 나타나는 것으로 분석되고 있다며 이같은 부작용을 해결하고 살기 좋은 친환경 산업의 중심지이자 지방자치의 선도지역으로 도약해 나가야 할 것이라고 덧붙혔습니다.

한편 이 자리에서 원희룡 지사는 제주의 세계환경중심도시 육성과 환경자산의 국립공원화, 각종 인프라 확충, 권한이양에 따른 경비 지원을 건의했습니다.
