Tax office cracking down on duty-free shopping
Korean residents allowed maximum of US$600 in duty-free purchases

With more Koreans heading overseas now that the summer vacation season is upon us, the tax office says it is cracking down through August 12th on travelers who exceed the duty-free purchase limit of 600 US dollars.

Officers will also crack down on high-price purchases and travelers attempting to bring in high-price merchandise via family members or other people.

If reported voluntarily, travelers will receive a 30 percent discount of up to 150,000 won on their tax bill. If caught, they will be charged an additional 40 percent tax over what they originally owed.

관세청, 면세범위 초과 물품 집중 단속

여름 휴가철을 맞아 해외여행객의 면세범위 초과 물품에 대한 단속이 강화됩니다.

관세청은 오는 25일부터 다음 달 12일까지 600달러인 해외여행객의 휴대품 면세 범위를 초과한 물품을 집중 단속합니다.

또 면세점 고액 구매자와 해외에서 신용카드를 많이 사용한 여행객,
비싼 물품을 가족 등 일행에게 맡겨 들여오는 행위도
단속할 방침입니다.

자진신고하면 15만 원 한도 내에서 관세의 30%를 감면받을 수 있고,
신고하지 않고 적발될 경우 납부할 세액의 40%를 더 내야합니다.
