Police announce ‘three strikes’ policy
Automatic jail for anyone caught repeatedly for certain assault cases

The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has announced stricter punishments for anybody found guilty of assaulting women, the elderly, or anyone else deemed by authorities to be quote “socially disadvantaged” unquote.

Authorities are enacting a “three strikes and you’re out” system. Offenders caught for the third time within three years will be imprisoned.

Police say they will also more heavily penalize organized violence committed by more than one person and the use of lethal weapons.

경찰, 여성 · 노인 대상 묻지마 폭력 엄단…구속 원칙

제주지방경찰청은 여성이나 노인 등 사회적 약자를 대상으로 한 폭력이나 이른바 '묻지마 폭력' 등에 대해 구속수사를 원칙으로 엄정 대처하기로 했습니다.

이에 따라 경찰은 여성 등 사회적 약자를 대상으로 한 폭력사건의 경우
3년 이내 벌금형 이상의 폭력범죄를 두번 넘게 저지르면 구속영장을 신청하는 '삼진 아웃제' 원칙을 적용할 예정입니다.

일반 폭력사범이더라도 3년 이내 두 번 이상의 집행유예 이상 처벌을 받았을 경우에도 삼진아웃 대상이 됩니다.

또 집단적 폭력이나 흉기를 사용하는 경우에 대해서도
강력 대처할 방침입니다.
