External object suspected

The tire puncture of a Korean Air passenger jet may have been made externally, according to officials examining an incident that led to a temporary runway closure at Jeju International Airport last Friday.

Officials from the transport ministry have been examining the ruptured tire. They found that the puncture appears to have been caused by external contact with a sharp object, possibly a nail or screw.

However, it is unclear whether the rupture took place on Jeju’s runway upon arrival or at Narita Airport when taking off.

Jeju International Airport temporarily closed its runway last Friday after a Korean Air jet's tire ruptured while it was landing. The plane was carrying around 150 passengers and crew from Tokyo's Narita International Airport and landed at 11:57 a.m. No injuries were reported.

국토교통부는 사고 항공기의 파손된 앞바퀴와 휠을 수거해 조사한 결과
바퀴에서 구멍이 발견됐으며, 이는 못이나 나사 같은 외부요인에 의한 것으로
추측된다고 밝혔습니다.

다만 바퀴에 구멍을 낸 이물질의 종류와 제주공항 활주로의 문제인지,
일본 나리타공항에서 발생한 문제인지에 대해서는 추가 조사가 필요하다는 입장입니다.

한편, 지난달 29일 낮 12시 쯤 제주공항에 착륙하던 대항항공기의 앞바퀴가 파손돼
승객 등 150여 명이 대피하고
활주로가 1시간여 동안 폐쇄됐습니다.
