Heatwave disaster control center opens
1,200 volunteers checking up on elderly living alone

The provincial government has opened a heatwave disaster control center to help minimize illnesses and damage to crops stemming from the recent hot weather.

The control center oversees some 400 rest areas across the island. It has also organized some twelve hundred volunteers to regularly check up on Jeju’s 4,000 or so elderly residents who live alone.

The control center will actively monitor crops at farms and the condition of greenhouses to help prevent further harm.

Heatwave warnings have been in place in Jeju for over 10 days now and 60 people have so far been diagnosed with heat-related ailments. Five are currently hospitalized and undergoing treatment.

폭염대응 재난상황실을 운영합니다.

제주도는 도내 무더위 쉼터 4백여 개소와 홀로 사는 어르신 가정 4천여 세대에
재난 도우미 1천 2백여 명을 배치해 건강상태 등을 수시로 점검할 계획입니다.

아울러 농작물은 생육상태를 모니터링 하고 비닐하우스는 차광과 환기시설을,
도내 양식장은 수온 변화 등을 집중적으로 살필 예정입니다.

한편 열흘 넘게 폭염 특보가 이어지는 제주에는 현재까지 60명의 온열환자가 발생했고 이 가운데 5명은 병원에서 입원 치료를 받고 있습니다.
