Warm, low-salinity seawater damaging fish farms
Conches, halibut along west coast affected

Fish farms along the island’s west coast are suffering from a recent influx of warm, low-salinity water.

The Jeju Fisheries Research Institute says it discovered 31-degree water with a salt concentration of 23 practical salinity units off the west coast of Jeju. Researchers say some of it had already flowed into nearby community fish farms.

That influx killed a large number of farmed conches in (동일리) Dongil-ri, (일과1리) Ilgwa-1-ri, and (하모리) Hamo-ri in Daejeong-eup. And dead halibut have been discovered at a fish farm in the (한경) Hangyeong region.

Institute researchers have since moved the conches from village fisheries to deeper waters, and they have discontinued feeding in the fish farms. They will also continue monitoring the low-salinity as they draw up a coastal fisheries management map.

고수온 저염분수 유입, 마을어장·양식장 피해

고수온의 저염분수가 제주해역으로 밀려오면서 서부지역을 중심으로 피해가 나타나기 시작했습니다.

제주특별자치도 해양수산연구원이 최근 서부해역에 대한 예찰결과 차귀도 서쪽 해역에서 수온 31도, 염분 23psu 내외의 물덩어리가 발견됐고 일부는 서부해역 마을어장에 유입된 것으로 보고 있습니다.

이로 인해 대정읍 동일리와 일과1리, 하모리어촌계에서 일부 폐사된 소라가 발견되고 있고
한경지역의 양식장에서 넙치 피해가 나타나기 시작했습니다.

제주도 해양수산연구원은 마을어장의 소라를 깊은 수심대로 이동조치하는 한편
어류육상 양식장에서의 먹이공급을 중단했으며 어업지도선을 이용해 저염분의 이동을 관측하고 있습니다.
