Captive dolphin freed in Jeju waters now a mother
Chunsami returned to wild in 2013

Researchers say they have confirmed that a captive dolphin that was released back into its natural habitat has started breeding.

The Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin named (춘삼이) Chunsami was illegally caught and trained for a dolphin show. She was returned to Jeju waters in 2013. A team of researchers from Jeju National University and Ewha Women’s University say she recently gave birth and is doing well.

The team spotted Chunsami and her calf August 9th off Daejeong-eup in Seogwipo. The researchers estimate the calf was born in late June or July, based on its size.

This marks the second time a formerly-captive dolphin freed in Jeju waters has successfully produced young. The first was (삼팔이) Sampali this April.

돌고래 연구팀에 따르면 지난 2013년 제주 앞바다에 방류된
남방큰돌고래 춘삼이가 최근 새끼를 낳아 기르는 것이 확인됐습니다.

연구팀은 지난 9일 서귀포시 대정읍 앞바다에서
새끼와 함께 있는 춘삼이를 발견했으며 크기나 몸통에 줄무늬 자국 등으로 미뤄 6월말이나 7월 중순쯤 태어난 것으로 추정하고 있습니다.

한편, 제주 바다에 방류된 뒤 야생 번식이 성공한 경우는
지난 4월 삼팔이에 이어 이번이 두번 째 입니다.
