Low-salinity water from China spreading to Jeju
Originated around the Yangtze River

Low-salinity water, which is deadly to fish and corals, is spreading from China to Korea… including Jeju waters.

The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology analyzed samples between July and August 16th and found that the same low-salinity water that had earlier been found near the Yangtze River in China was spreading to Korean waters.

A large belt of the water is currently spread across Jeju’s southwestern coastline. Some of it has already made it to Jeju’s northern coastline into the waters that separates Jeju from the mainland.

As a result, Jeju has already started to see deaths of conches and other shellfish as well as halibut and other fish at community fish farms.

중국발 저염분수, 제주·남해로 확산

어패류 폐사를 야기하는 저염분수가 중국에서 발생한 뒤 제주 등 국내 해역으로 확산되고 있습니다.

한국해양과학기술원은 천리안 해양관측위성이 지난달부터 이달 16일까지 관측한 영상을 분석한 결과 지난달 초 중국 양쯔강 지역에서 발견된 저염분수가 이달 초 제주 연안까지 퍼져나간 것으로
확인됐다고 밝혔습니다.

특히 제주 남서 해역에 저염분수가 넓게 분포하고 일부는 해류를 따라 제주 북부 해역을 지나 남해로 확산하고 있다며 지속적인 관측이 필요하다고 설명했습니다.

제주에는 저염분수의 영향으로 마을어장에서 기르던 소라 등 어패류와
양식장의 넙치가 폐사하며 피해를 낳고 있습니다.
