Typhoon-free summer an increasing possibility
Strong high pressure system keeping storms at bay

It’s becoming increasingly possible that Jeju will make it through this summer typhoon-free.

The Korea Meteorological Administration and the National Typhoon Center say the eight storms that have formed in the region have not affected Jeju conditions.

Three storm systems are currently affecting Asia - Typhoon Mindulle (민들레), Tropical Storm Lionrock, and Tropical Storm Kompasu - but none are due to head toward the Korean Peninsula.

Researchers at the typhoon center say a stronger-than-usual North Pacific high pressure system is the reason for the absence of typhoons here this summer.

올 여름 제주는 태풍이 없는 해로 기록될 가능성이 커지고 있습니다.

기상청과 국가태풍센터 등에 따르면 올들어 지금까지 8개의 태풍이 발생하고 소멸할 때까지 제주에 영향을 준 태풍은 없었고,

최근 발생해 이동중인 제9호 태풍 민들레와 제10호 태풍 라이언록,
제11호 태풍 곤파스 역시 유동적이긴 하지만
한반도 쪽으로 이동할 가능성은 거의 없는 것으로 예상되고 있습니다.

이같은 현상은 평년보다 강하게 발달한 북태평양고기압의 세력에 따른 것으로 국가태풍센터는 분석하고 있습니다.
