Cruise ships banned from disposing of food waste here
They discarded 160 tons in 2015

Ocean liners will soon no longer be able to dispose of food waste on the island.

The provincial government has requested assistance from the Korea Customs Office in implementing a new regulation to that effect September 5th.

The vessels have until now been allowed to discard food waste they generated onboard at an incineration plant in northern Jeju. That facility is showing its age and it’s having to deal with an overload of waste, so provincial officials decided to ban all disposal by cruise ships starting next week.

In 2015, the ships left behind some 160 tons of food waste.

크루즈선에서 발생한 음식물쓰레기의 제주반입이 금지됩니다.

제주시는 다음달 5일부터 크루즈선에서 발생하는 음식물류 폐기물의 반입을 금지하기로 하고 관세청에 이에 대한 협조를 요청했습니다.

크루즈선에서 발생하는 쓰레기는 지금까지 북부광역소각장에서 처리했지만
시설이 노후되고 반입량이 급증해 운영에 어려움을 겪어왔습니다.

지난해 크루즈선에서 발생한 음식물 폐기물은 160톤에 달했습니다.
