Jeju airport traffic ‘worse than central Seoul’
Researchers studied average vehicle speeds

A new survey shows that the traffic around Jeju International Airport is more congested than the traffic in central Seoul.

The Jeju branch of the Bank of Korea conducted the study in June. Researchers measured vehicle speed and found that the average on (도령로) Doryeong-ro, the road linking Yeon-dong to the airport, was just 19.3 kilometers per hour. The average in the middle of the nation’s capital is 19.6 kilometers per hour.

The traffic congestion cost in Jeju, which includes vehicle operating costs, such as fuel and wear, as well as pollution emissions… stood at 437 billion won… up 74 percent from five years ago.

The BOK says the increase in population is likely to add to the heavy traffic, which could slow economic growth, put a dent in tourist satisfaction, and discourage mainland companies from relocating here.

제주공항 인근 교통체증이 서울 도심지역 보다 심한 것으로 나타났습니다.

한국은행 제주본부에 따르면 지난 6월 중 제주시 연동과 공항 입구를 연결하는 도령로의 통행속도는 시속 19.3㎞로 서울 도심의 통행속도 시속 19.6㎞보다 느린 것으로 조사됐습니다.

교통량 급증으로 인한 교통혼잡비용은 4천370억 원으로 2011년보다 74% 증가했습니다.

한국은행은 도내 인구와 차량대수 급증으로 인한 교통난 심화가 제주 경제 성장세를 둔화시키고 관광객 만족도와 기업들의 이전 욕구를 약화시킬 수 있다고 전망했습니다.
