Outdoor-grown mandarin crop estimated at 544,000 tons
7,000 tons below initial projection

Analysts estimate the size of this year’s outdoor-grown mandarin orange crop at 544,000 tons.

A fruit survey committee at the provincial government based that number on its second round of surveys. This most recent projection is 7,000 tons below the first one.

They say the dry and hot summer means this year’s fruit will be about two millimeters smaller than average, but that it will be sweeter. Normally, the sugar content is 6.6 degrees brix, but this year’s harvest looks like it will be 8 degrees.

There are also more mandarins on each tree. Normally, there are about 800, but this year there will be nearly 1,000.

Officials have asked growers to voluntarily toss out below-average-quality fruit in order to maintain an optimal supply this year.

올해 노지감귤 예상 생산량이 크게 줄어 54만 4천 톤으로 예측됐습니다.

제주특별자치도 감귤관측조사위원회가 최근 실시한 2차 관측조사에 따르면
예상생산량은 54만 4천톤으로 1차 때보다 7만 톤 감소했습니다.

또 지난 여름 폭염과 가뭄 탓으로 감귤 열매 크기는 38mm로 평년보다 2mm 작은 대신, 평균 당도는 8브릭스로 평년보다 1.4 브릭스 높을 것으로 예상했습니다.

특히 올해는 나무당 열매 수가 평년보다 2백개 이상 많은 1천개에 육박하면서
적정생산량과 품질관리를 위해 자발적인 열매솎기가 필요하다고 당부했습니다.
