Mosquito-borne Japanese encephalitis confirmed on mainland
‘Cover up when outdoors’

Jeju authorities are advising island residents to take precautions after people in Seoul and Gwangju have tested positive for the Japanese encephalitis virus.

The mosquito species that carries the virus is frequently seen in Jeju through the end of October. Health authorities are urging locals to wear long-sleeved clothing when outdoors and sleep with mosquito nets.

Quarantine measures are also planned for farms and areas where the mosquitos are most frequently found.

Korea has had 131 cases of Japanese encephalitis since 2010, 21 of which resulted in death. To date, nobody in Jeju has tested positive for it.

타 지역 일본뇌염 환자 잇따라…예방 주의

최근 서울과 광주에서 일본뇌염 환자가 잇따라 발생하면서 제주도가 뇌염 예방에 주의를 당부하고 있습니다.

제주도는 10월 말까지 일본뇌염을 비롯한 각종 질병을 옮기는 매개모기가
활동하는 시기라며 야외 활동시에는 긴 소매 옷을 입고 실내에서는 방충망을 사용해야 한다고 강조했습니다.

또 축사와 물 웅덩이 등 모기 서식지를 중심으로 집중 방역활동도 병행할 계획입니다.

한편 지난 2010년 이후 전국에서는 모두 131명의 일본뇌염 환자가 발생해
21명이 숨졌지만 제주에서는 같은 기간 단 한명의 환자도 발생하지 않았습니다.
