Opposition brews over ‘Welfare Town’ public housing plan
Area residents deny consenting to plan

Residents near Jeju City’s so-called “Welfare Town” are voicing their opposition to a plan to build new public housing in the area.

At a Monday news conference from the provincial office building, representatives of Donam-dong community groups argued that a public organization or government office, like Jeju City Hall, needed to spearhead the development of the Welfare Town, so that it could achieve its purpose of providing high quality public services to area residents.

Members of the community groups also refuted claims by the governor that there was a consensus among residents to build the public housing units, calling that an exaggeration of just a few people’s opinions.
