Online petition to ban visa-free travel to Jeju
Follows pair of high-profile crimes involving Chinese nationals

Chinese can vacation in Jeju without the need of a visa, but following a pair of high-profile criminal cases here involving Chinese nationals, critics have started an online petition to ban the visa-free travel program.

More than 10,000 people have signed the petition, which was launched Sunday through Daum Agora.

On Saturday, a 50-year-old Chinese man allegedly entered a chapel in Yeon-dong, Jeju City and stabbed a 61-year-old Korean woman who was praying there. She later died of her injuries.

About a week earlier than that, on September 9th, eight Chinese tourists allegedly assaulted a local restaurant owner for not letting them drink alcohol that they had bought in from outside the restaurant.

인터넷서 외국인 무사증 폐지 청원운동

최근 제주에서 중국인에 의한 강력범죄가 잇따라 발생하면서 인터넷에서 무사증 입국제도를 폐지해야 한다는 청원운동이 이어지고 있습니다.

지난 18일부터 포털사이트 다음 아고라 게시판에 제주도 무비자입국을 중단하라는 글이 올라온후 오늘 낮까지 모두 1만명 이상이 찬성한다는 서명운동에 동참했습니다.

한편 지난 17일 오전 제주시 연동 모 성당에서 기도중이던 60대 여성이 50대 중국인 관광객에 의해 묻지마 범행을 당해 숨졌고,

이보다 앞선 지난 9일에는 제주시내 한 식당에서 중국인 8명이 자신들이 구입해 온 술을 못 마시게 했다는 이유로 식당 주인과 손님을 집단 폭행한 사건이 벌어졌습니다.
