Jeju to push for state-designation of Jeju Seongji
Designation would allow for national funding for restoration



The Jeju Provincial Office of World Natural Heritage Sites Management is hosting a forum next month on the Jeju Fortress, called the Jeju Seongji.

The October first event in Jeju City’s Venture Maru Building is part of the province's drive to get the Jeju Seongji designated a national cultural property.

Located in Ido 1-dong, Jeju Seongji is today only a remnant of what used to be a 3.2-kilometer fortress wall built during the Tamna kingdom. The exact date of construction is unknown but records show workers extended the wall in 1105, meaning it may have been built more than a thousand years ago. Today only 312 meters of walls remain.

The site was designated a provincial monument in 1971, but it has yet to be recognized nationally. If listed as a state-designated cultural property, state funding would be made available for restoration work.

제주성지, 국가지정문화재 등재 추진

제주도 기념물인 제주성지를 국가지정문화재로 등재하기 위한 작업이 추진됩니다.

제주도 세계유산본부는 다음달 1일 제주벤처마루에서 제주성지의 국가지정문화재 지정 추진을 위한
성곽포럼을 개최합니다.

한국성곽학회 주관으로 열리는 이번 포럼은 도지정문화재 기념물 제3호인 제주성지를 국가지정문화재로 지정해 제주성지의 위상을 전국에 알리고 복원사업에 국가 지원을 받기 위한 취지입니다.

제주성지는 국내 읍성 가운데 대규모 성곽으로 평가받고 있으며 현재 오현단과 제주기상청 일대에
약 310미터가 남아 있습니다.
