JDC donates 2,400 wetsuits to haenyeo
Show of support in bid for UNESCO designation

As a show of support in getting Jeju’s traditional female divers listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Jeju Free International Development Center has donated 2,400 colored wetsuits to the haenyeo community.

JDC Chief Kim Han-wook donated the suits to the 2,400 currently active haenyeo at a Friday ceremeny. The gift is worth 780 million won.

Kim said the haenyeo represented the women of Jeju and rightfully deserved to have their history preserved, adding that the JDC would continue to make public efforts to preserve their unique culture.

JDC, 해녀 2천 4백여 명에 유색 해녀복 전달

제주국제자유도시개발센터가 제주 해녀의 유네스코인류무형문화유산 등재를 기원하며 현직 해녀들에게 유색 해녀복을 전달했습니다.

오늘 오전, JDC 본사에서 열린 전달식에는 김한욱 이사장을 비롯해 도내 어촌계 주민과 해녀들이 참석한 가운데 올해 지자체나 수협 지원대상에서 제외된 해녀 2천 4백여 명을 위한 7억 8천만 원 상당의 유색 해녀복이 전달됐습니다.

김한욱 JDC 이사장은 제주 해녀는 제주 여성의 상징이고 역사적으로 보호받아 마땅한 문화유산이라며 앞으로 지역 문화 보존을 위한 사회공헌활동을 이어가겠다고 밝혔습니다.
