Planned ‘Chinese education city’ seems unrealistic
Researchers say the provincial government should have examined the feasibility of the planned Chinese language education city. They say there are many legal hurdles to the project and that it may not work out well because of Korea’s proximity to China, where school fees and other prices are relatively low.

‘Unrealistic’ Ship Safety Act
According to the Ship Safety Act, only 12 passengers are allowed on board cargo vessels on routes between Jeju and the mainland. Truck drivers have no choice but to pay extra to fly there and pick up their trucks, which is especially hard for transporters of live flatfish, who must regularly supply the fish with oxygen.

Sea routes likely to be reorganized with cargo focus
Following the sinking of the Sewol in April 2014, far fewer people are taking ferries between Jeju and the mainland. Ferry operators are reorganizing their operations to focus on freight, and some are considering cutting the number of sailings because of financial difficulties.

Information on tourist attractions, hotels, and the island’s tour infrastructure has been collected and handed out separately by travel agencies, municipal governments, and other organizations, but not all of that information matches up with what others are providing. The provincial government therefore wants to organize it.

Jobless rate jumps to 4.6% in February
Yonhap is reporting that South Korea's jobless rate rose sharply in February from a month earlier due to seasonal factors and more people seeking work. According to a report by Statistics Korea, the jobless rate stood at 4.6 percent last month, up from 3.8 percent in January.

S. Korean businessmen visit N. Korea
More than a dozen South Korean businessmen traveled to North Korea's border town of Kaesong on Wednesday as concerns grow over the fate of a joint industrial zone there. This comes after the North unilaterally decided to raise the minimum wage for its workers at the Kaesong Industrial Complex.
