A memorial service for the victims of the April Third Incident was held Friday morning at the Jeju April Third Peace Park. Prime minister (이완구) Lee Wan-koo, Saenuri Party Chairman (김무성) Kim Mu-seong, Chairman of the New Politics Alliance for Democracy party (문재인) Moon Jae-in, and other representatives from across the political spectrum joined relatives of the victims to pay their respects. Jeju April Third Peace Park

The 67th memorial service for the victims of the incident was held at the Jeju April Third Peace Park.

April 3rd was designated as a national memorial day last year.

Relatives of victims along with island residents paid their respects to the deceased during the ceremony, with the rain and fog befitting the occasion.

Prime minister (이완구) Lee Wan-koo participated in the ceremony on behalf of the national government, and promised support for victims and their families.

Lee made reference to last year’s National Sports Festival, when representatives of the Jeju Police Veterans Association, and the April Third Incident victims organization linked up in the opening ceremony. He said that the historic reconciliation between the two groups would lay foundations for a peaceful future.

Governor Won Heeryong outlined three principles for resolving issues regarding the April 3rd Incident at his address. They are tolerance based on community spirit, unification and world peace, and finally sharing lessons learned to future generations.

Won suggested for an official period to commemorate the April Third incident and stressed to actively continue investigations as well as efforts to identify the victims and remains of the April Third incident.

The provincial government is hoping for national financial aid, including medical expenses for victims of the incident, and for reconciliation and national unity, as well as the continuing operation of the Jeju April Third Peace Foundation.

He urged the national government as well as conservative groups to change their attitudes toward the tragic incident.
