KCTV: ‘Island, Line and Memory’

An arts exhibition is underway at the Jeju World Natural Heritage Center, portraying Jeju artist Koh Gwangpyo’s longing for home... after living in the United States for 15 years. The exhibition is entitled “Island, Line and Memory.” Suejin Choi has more.

Homesickness is like a thirst that cannot be quenched… it is a void that cannot be filled until you return home. One artist left his home in Jeju to pursue his dreams, but life overseas was not as easy as it seemed.

He often thought of home during the 15 years he was living in the US, and expressed the longing through his art. A collection of these artworks is now on display at the Jeju World Natural Heritage Center, Special Exhibition Hall, and is entitled “Island, Line and Memory”.

30 watercolors, 4 sculptures, 13 3D artworks

The collection includes artworks previously displayed in the US and in Korea, and is comprised of 30 watercolor paintings, 4 sculptures and 13 3D artworks.

Through my paintings, I expressed the longing I had for Jeju for 15 years while I was studying in the U.S. Part of that collection is currently on display here.

Koh’s watercolor paintings were drawn on plaster boards normally used at construction sites in order to convey rough but refined textures.

Instead of the usual canvas, I used plaster boards used for construction to paint on. Using wall painting techniques, I portrayed Jeju’s strong lines. The lines were the motif for my work.

Visitors are given 3D glasses to enjoy the folk tale-turned-artwork “Tturum (뚜럼) Series” from 2013 which is on display once again, only this time… in 3D.

This is my first time here. The images are so soft. They remind me of my mother and Jeju oreum. It’s a very warm exhibition.
