Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • KCTV(1) Bus Delivery-Locker Service Catching On
  • The new bus delivery-locker service in Seogwipo is catching on. People wishing to send a parcel from Jeju City to Seogwipo can do so by simply placing the item on an intercity bus. When it arrives in Seogwipo, it is placed inside a locker so that the receiver can come and collect it at a time of their convenience. The new system is an alternative to the usual delivery service, and same-day arrival is guaranteed. But there are still some glitches that need to be worked out…Mike Laidman reports. [slug] Old Seogwipo Intercity Bus Terminal At a bus stop in Seogwipo a student places a bag inside a locker and locks it with a combination. Soon, another student arrives, unlocks the locker, and takes the bag. [slug] Temporary locker storage for items shipped via intercity bus The system allows someone in Jeju City to load the item they wish to send onto an intercity bus bound for Seogwipo. Once it arrives, it is placed inside a locker and stored there until the recipient comes to pick it up. Previously, bus deliveries required the person on the receiving end to wait for the bus to arrive and then pick it up in person, but that is no longer the case. Interview Kim Jin-seong / Grade 1, Namju High School I don’t have to work around the bus timetable anymore, which saves me time and is much more convenient. There’s little chance of theft as each locker can be locked with a unique combination. The bus driver places the parcel in a locker, enters a combination, and then informs the recipient. Interview Ko Tae-kyung / Seogwipo Traffic Administration Division We will see how it goes. If it’s well received, we will install lockers in more locations. It’s only been a few weeks since the new system was put into place, and there are some glitches which need to be fixed. On one locker is the number 10. [camera] Ko Moon-su That means it’s been 10 days since the item was locked inside of it. If too many items are left for too long inside the lockers then it will mean there is no space for others to store things. Seogwipo public official We’re not sure if it’s a prank by some students or if there’s really a parcel in there that needs to be picked up. We will post a notice on the locker, but after a set number of days we will have to force it open. [reporter] Mike Laidman While the new bus delivery-locker system is showing some great promise, for it to be viable in the long run there will have to be changes made to ensure fair and smooth operation. • Protect Your Skin at the Beach
  • The peak summer vacation season has kicked off and many people are heading out to the beach to swim and relax under the sun. Water safety is key, but just as important is that you protect our skin from harmful ultraviolet rays that cause skin cancer. Mike Laidman reports. The scorching heat is tough for some, but good news for beach-goers. With summer in full swing, the beaches are packed with vacationers who have come here to play in the waves and soak in the sun. The only problem is that these warming rays also pack a powerful ultraviolet punch. UV rays reflect off water, four times more than they do concrete, increasing UV danger. [INTERVIEW] Lee Gwang-sook / Tourist The UV rays are so strong here. Since we’re at the beach, I’ve been applying a lot of sunscreen to avoid getting burnt. Tanning oils allow some rays through, and offer minimal UV protection. Sunscreens are much better, but if not specifically rated for use in water or during activities where you might sweat heavily, will wash off, leaving you exposed. Skin also burns more quickly when wet, so the risk of getting a burn is higher after a swim. [slug] Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours A waterproof sunscreen is strongly recommended if you’re at the beach, and it is important to reapply sunscreen every two to three hours. Interview Kang Hyung-yoon / General practitioner UV rays can cause the skin to age and can worsen pigmentation. When you’re outdoors, you should apply a sunscreen that has PA+++ and SPF 50 ratings every 2 to 3 hours. [camera] Moon Ho-seong After long hours of exposure to UV rays, it can be helpful to refresh the skin with either a cool, wet towel or a cucumber pack. [reporter] Mike Laidman Parasols and hats are also helpful in blocking UV rays, and experts advise that you stay out of direct sunlight from 11am to 2pm, when the days are hottest and UV rays are at their strongest. • Drought Threatens Farms
  • Early signs of drought are being observed in western regions of the island. Seasonal crops like beans are suffering a direct blow from the prolonged heatwave. Lee Hee-jung has more. Report [slug] Aewol-eup, Jeju City You can see cracks in the soil on this bean farm in Aewol-eup, Jeju City. It’s harvest season, but the recent heatwave has dried up the land, causing leaves and new crops to wither. Bean vines at this time of year should be knee-high but they are only half the usual height. Farmers are worried the lack of rain will mean they have to give up harvesting beans this season. Interview Yang Gwon-beom / Bean farmer Flowers are starting to blossom. That means that unless it rains soon, we may lose the harvest. " The last time it rained was on the 12th of July due to Typhoon Chanhom. Apart from that, there has been no rain for over a month. Results of soil moisture monitoring show that the land is extremely dry in Shineom-ri in Aewol-eup and Yonggang-dong in Jeju City. The soil was also found to be dry in Gwideok-ri in Hallim-eup and Shindo-ri in Daejeong-eup as well as other areas. [camera] Hyun Gwang-hoon The drought is dealing a blow to farms as crops are not able to grow properly. Interview Ko Bong-cheol / Jeju Seobu Agricultural Technology Center We’re seeing the early stages of drought. If it doesn’t rain soon, farms with agricultural water will need to use that to get as many crops as possible. [REPORTER] Lee Hee-jung The sparse rain is making it unlikely for dry conditions at farms to end any time soon. And farmers are worried this harvesting season may come to a sour end. • KCTV: Beating the Heat With Heat
  • Here’s something new - as the scorching summer days continue, some people are opting to beat the heat… with heat. Here’s Mike Balfour to explain. [slug] Namnyeong High School The moment you open these gym doors... you can feel the humid indoor air. These students have been exercising non-stop and and they’re covered in sweat. This student is practicing rope climbing… each time moving up a little higher towards his goal. Interview Kang Min-seok / Judo athlete, Namnyeong High School I’m practicing for the National Sports Festival. It’s hot but I want to win a medal, so I’m going to try harder. " [camera] Kim Seung-cheol Aspiring to become a world boxing champion, this student fights the heat with his boxing moves. It’s hot enough just standing still, but that doesn’t stop him from practicing his footwork. Interview Kyu Su-hyun / Boxer, Namnyeong High School Last year I practiced a lot and had good results. I want to do well again this year. " It’s the hottest time of the day… between 1 and 2 pm. [slug] Jeju Sports Multiplex Most people would simply want to stay in the shade, but the people here prefer to beat the heat playing gateball. As the game progresses, they forget that it’s sweltering hot, especially when the ball moves exactly as planned. Interview Yang Bong-wook / Ora 1-dong, Jeju City I came here to exercise with the elderly despite the hot weather. [Reporter] Mike Balfour This summer, despite the heatwave, a growing number of people are choosing to exercise and sweat it off. Mike Balfour KCTV
