Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Film Focus 0814
  • It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. This week we’ve got what might just be one of the best animated films of the year. Shaun the Sheep Movie is the latest to come from Aardman Animations, and if you’ve ever seen the delightful Wallace and Gromit shorts, then there’s nothing more I need tell you. Opening alongside Shaun this week is Boulevard, a movie that opened last year across the ocean but is finding its way to Korean theatres now. Boulevard stars the late Robin Williams in a dramatic role. Let these two excite and surprise, as we take them for a spin to see what they offer. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015, Mark Burton, Richard Starzak) Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun. Shaun the Sheep Movie is based off a British television show that got its start in 2007, itself a spinoff of a character, the sheep Shaun, from the iconic Wallace and Gromit series from a few years earlier. When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. A mix up with the farmer, a caravan and a very steep hill lead them all to the big city. It's up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to the green grass of home. There is not a single negative review for the movie. It’s all stop-motion, which is a painstaking, but here, utterly rewarding process. There is no dialogue, yet the animators are still able to communicate so much through the almost microscopic adjustments of the wrinkles in a character's forehead or by shifting the angle of an eye. Warm, funny, and brilliantly animated, Shaun the Sheep is a jewel of a movie. [Slug CG] Boulevard (2014, Dito Montiel) A devoted husband is forced to confront his secret life. Turning the page now, right over, we find Boulevard, featuring Robin Williams. ‘It’s never too late to make a U-turn,’ is the tagline for this film. Williams plays a 60-year old banker who is coasting through his life until the moment where he makes a change, and decides to stop concealing his true identity. Reviews are pretty lukewarm. The plot is too plodding, too predictable, and feels incomplete, say some. However, praise for Williams’ final dramatic performance is almost universal.
