Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention. 제주에도 클럽 마약?…경찰 수사 확대 지난 달 경남에 있는 노래주점과 외국인 전용 클럽 등에서 엑스터시와 케타민 등 마약류를 판매한 판매책과 유통 조직이 해경에 검거됐습니다. 전국적으로 클럽이나 술집에서 마약 범죄가 잇따르는 가운데 제주에서도 유사 마약 사범이 검거됐습니다. 모 클럽 관계자였던 30대 A 씨가 지난 달 엑스터시 수십 정을 소지하고 투약한 혐의로 구속됐습니다. 제주지검은 A 씨를 마약류 소지와 투약 혐의로 구속 기소했고 함께 투약한 이들에 대해서도 보완 수사를 진행하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 엑스터시는 필로폰보다 환각 작용이 3배나 큰 신종 마약류로 젊은 층이 주로 투약하면서 일명 클럽용 마약으로도 알려졌습니다. <인터뷰 : 고광언/ 한국마약범죄학회 제주지회장> 엑스터시를 투약하면 환각작용을 일으켜서 기분이 아주 상승되는 효과를 누리는 마약으로 알려지고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들이 많이 이용하는 마약으로 보면 되겠습니다. 제주경찰청은 이번 사건은 클럽과는 무관하다면서도 구체적인 혐의점 등은 수사가 진행 중이여서 밝히기 어렵다고 전했습니다. 지난해 관세청이 적발한 신종 마약류는 260kg으로 2년 전보다 10배 이상 급증했습니다. 이 가운데 엑스터시 적발 물량은 같은 기간 7배나 늘었습니다. 제주에서도 엑스터시 마약 사범이 검거된 가운데 개인의 단순 범죄가 아닌 전국 사례처럼 연관 업종으로 범죄가 퍼졌을지 수사 결과에 관심이 모아지고 있습니다.

  • Spoiled by Selfish Campers
  • Camping has become more and more popular amid social distancing restrictions. Many campers choose (이호) Iho Beach for their camping ground and area residents have complained about trash being left behind by campers. Last year, trees have been planted to keep campers from setting up their tent but it isn’t enough to keep the campers away. Joseph Kim reports. Report This is the entrance area of (이호) Iho Beach in Jeju City. Spaces between the trees are fully occupied by camping tents. There is a “no camping” sign. But campers disregard the restriction. The area is littered with trash, and there is evidence of making fires between the trees. Some people set up tents taking up the space without any actual campers for long periods of time, as if the spot were their own property. For years, area residents have complained about piles of trash campers leave behind, and ugly views of tents located in a disorderly fashion. The community center planted camellia trees and wildflowers last year to fill up the empty space to keep campers away. But a selfish few still pitch their camping tents in cramped spaces between the newly planted trees, or on privately-owned lands where the community center didn’t plant trees. The community center is planning to ask for property owners’ consent to plant trees to limit the area for selfish campers to settle down.   • International Electric Vehicle Expo postponed Event to be held from Sep. 7 - 10 The 8th International Electric Vehicle Expo will be held from September 7th to 10th at the Jungmun Tourist Complex. The Expo Organizing Committee held its fourth meeting and adjusted the event schedule from May to September, giving more time for a majority of vaccinations to be carried out. The event will feature specialized programs including virtual exhibitions where visitors can come across various products online. In addition, the national and local governments, and other countries will attend the event to discuss the development of future eco-friendly vehicles and energy conversion in response to climate change. 2. 코로나19로 국제전기차엑스포 9월로 연기 제8회 국제전기자동차엑스포가 오는 9월 7일부터 10일까지 제주국제컨벤션센터를 중심으로 중문관광단지 일대에서 열립니다. 국제전기자동차엑스포 조직위원회는 4차 회의를 열고 코로나 상황을 고려해 5월 개최 예정이던 행사를 백신 접종이 상당부분 진행된 후인 9월로 조정했다고 밝혔습니다. 이번 행사에서는 사이버 공간에서 다양한 제품군을 만날 수 있는 버추얼 전시 등 특화 프로그램이 마련됩니다. 또 우리 정부와 지자체, 관련 산업 선진국 들이 참석해 기후변화에 대응한 미래 친환경차 개발과 에너지 전환을 논의하는 자리도 마련됩니다.

  • Prices of Jeju black pork soar Increase in number of tourists leads to higher demand for black pork Due to the recent increase in the number of tourists, the price of Jeju grown black pork is soaring. As of the 13th, the auction price of Jeju black pork traded at the public market of Jeju branch of National Livestock Cooperative Federation stood at 8,900 won per kilogram, a sharp increase of more than 80% compared to the 5,300 won of the same period last year. The increase in the prices stands out compared to the 20% increase in the prices of normal pigs from the same period of last year. As such, the price of Jeju black pork has soared due to the recent increase in the number of tourists visiting Jeju due to COVID 19, and the demand for black pork, Jeju's specialty, has also increased significantly. 3. 제주 흑돼지 가격 급등…관광객 수요 증가 최근 관광객 증가로 제주산 흑돼지 가격이 폭등하고 있습니다. 지난 13일 기준 제주축협 공판장에서 거래된 제주흑돼지의 경락가격은 킬로그램당 8천9백원대로 지난해 같은기간 5천3백원대와 비교해 80% 이상 급등했습니다. 이는 일반 돼지가격이 지난해 같은 기간보다 20% 가량 오른 것과 비교하면 차이는 더 큽니다. 이처럼 제주 흑돼지 가격이 급등 요인으로 최근 코로나19로 제주를 찾는 관광객이 크게 늘어난 가운데 제주의 명물인 흑돼지 수요도 크게 늘어났기 때문으로 보고 있습니다.

  • A tall metal fence that was blocking the magnificent view of Seogwipo Waters for 30 years has finally been removed, and will be renovated with a more aesthetic one. Fishermen, residents and local groups had been at odds with the fence. Mike Laidman explains. Report Located at Seogwipo Port, (새섬) Saeseom Island, along with another Seogwipo landmark, (새연교) Saeyeongyo Bridge, attracts newfound attention. A metal fence that had run along the border of the fishing port for 30 years has finally been removed. The removal of this high fence allows for the magnificent view of (새섬) Saeseom Island and the waters that surround it. The 3 meter-high fence was built for safety and security reasons when the Seogwipo Port was designated as a trading port in 1991. When most of the port’s facilities were removed from the security area list in 2017, the metal fence still remained, running 300 meters along the seashore. Residents and local groups wanted the fence dismantled as it blocks the magnificent coastal views. Fishermen and area residents were at odds over the removal of the fence. The fishermen argued that the fence played an important role in protecting their property. The province ultimately decided to dismantle part of the fence, covering 200 meters, and built a 1.3-meter high safety fence as a first step following several consultations between groups and related organizations.   • Forest commentary program to be launched Program will be available at Hannam Experimental Forest from May 16 A program that allows visitors to travel a forest path while listening to commentaries at the Hannam Experimental Forest on Saryeoni Forest Path will be launched. The Warm Temperate and Subtropical Forest Research Center of The National Institute of Forest Science announced that it will operate a forest commentary program with regards to the (한남) ‘Hannam Experimental Forest’ from the 16th through October. Taking into account the COVID 19 situation the program is being carried out in accordance with the quarantine guidelines such as maintaining a safe distance and wearing masks. Hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and reservations can be made online. 3. 사려니숲길 '한남시험림' 숲해설 프로그램 운영 (번역가) 사려니숲길에 있는 한남시험림에서 해설을 들으며 탐방하는 체험프로그램이 마련됩니다. 산림청 국립산림과학원 제주난대.아열대산림연구소는 오는 16일부터 10월까지 한남시험림을 활용한 숲해설 프로그램을 운영한다고 밝혔습니다. 다만 코로나 상황을 고려해 안전거리 유지와 마스크 착용 등 방역지침에 따라 진행됩니다. 운영시간은 오전 9시부터 오후 5시까지며 인터넷을 예약이 가능합니다.

  • Phones are still a popular way scammers are reaching us. In fact, their methods are evolving. More than 200 residents have become prey to scam this year. Scammers impersonate banks and promise to provide low-interest loans. They then send a malicious code that replaces banking apps with fake ones that intercept calls allowing victims to access your bank. Todd Thacker reports. Report This is a street in (외도동) Oedo-dong, Jeju City. A middle-aged woman and a young man stand near a phone booth. The woman and the man talk on a cellphone by turns. Then the woman takes a bundle of cash out of her bag and passes it to the man. What we’re witnessing is a phone scammer at work, a scheme that will result in the loss of tens of million won. A man enters a local bank. He withdraws 20 million won and hands it over to phone scammers. He was tricked into believing that the scammers would switch his loan to a cheaper one under a government lending program. In his haste to make the deal, the man borrowed money from relatives and friends. Ultimately he realized it was a scam, but it was too late. Not long after, he lost his job. Several suspects who acted as money collectors in the phone scam have been arrested over the last few days. Between mid-April and early May, seven victims lost a total of 130 million won. The scammers impersonate bank officials by telephone or text and provide fake information on low-interest government lending programs. They send malicious code to victims that is similar in appearance to a banking app. The code replaces an already installed banking app with a fake one, enabling scammers to intercept calls from a victim to a bank or a Financial Supervisory Service. 2,200 cases of phone-based scams have been reported over the last five years in Jeju. Already this year some 218 cases have racked up 4.5 billion won in damages. As a police investigation continues, two scammers find themselves behind bars, and their accomplices are on the run.
