Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Green Mandarin Industry Unripe
  • A major local food processing company is likely to withdraw its green mandarin beverage business due to its stalled sales. Though the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation is making efforts to boost the sales of the unripe fruit, sales continue to plummet. Joseph Kim reports. Report The National Agricultural Cooperative Federation distributed 28.8 tons of unripe green mandarins through its retail supermarket, (하나로) Hanaro Mart, and big supermarkets last year. That’s more than a 30 percent drop, compared with a year before when over 40 tons were sold. The federation blames the fruit’s short shelf-life for the decrease in sales. It says if the fruit is stored at room temperature for more than three days it turns yellow, and consumers return the fruit for a refund, and yellowish fruit is in poor demand. To overcome the limitation, efforts are being made. The province’s agriculture authorities offer boxes and ice packs to green mandarin farmers, but it hasn’t proved effective enough in practice. The Jeju Agricultural Research & Extension Service is testing sliced frozen green mandarins and vacuum packing of whole fruits to extend shelf life. Once the limitation in storage is resolved, the role of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation is crucial to boosting sales of the green fruit as the federation is actually wholly responsible for the distribution of fresh fruits through its massive distribution network. Years ago, the ordinance to boost the green mandarin business was enacted. In the first year of the green mandarin purchase by the federation, nationwide promotional activities including tasting events were funded by the federation. But the federation is now reluctant to support those activities because of expenses. Last year, 2,500 tons of the unripe mandarin purchased by the federation went to beverage companies. Without cooperation of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation that owns big distribution channels, the island’s unripe fruit industry won’t mature. Joseph Kim, KCTV
