Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

The Jeju Fire Department says rescuers were sent out 38 times last year. That’s a sharp increase compared to the 5 cases in 2014 and then the 19 in 2015. Officials say there are more extremely hot days each summer, and that leads to more cases of heat stroke. Authorities have therefore organized nine ambulances and 77 paramedics and EMTs to help people suffering from the heat this summer. They will also use seven firefighting pump trucks to cool people down on especially hot days.

  • Rising hairtail catch leads to falling prices
  • Rising hairtail catch leads to falling prices Prices tumble 40% in June As fishermen catch more hairtail, prices for the fish are plummeting. According to the provincial government, fishermen hauled in 29-hundred tons last month - five times as much as the June 2016 total. Analysts say that higher water temperatures this year have drawn more more prey for hairtail, and that’s why so many are in local waters. The huge haul has depressed prices by 40 percent compared to last year ? to 26,000 won per kilogram. The provincial government is therefore asking Seoul to support the industry through an injection of 39 billion won.

  • Jeju: A to Z (Beach Safety)
  • This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a timely look at beach safety. This summer millions of people will enjoy cooling off along Jeju’s coast, and so it’s our sincere hope that swimmers will keep these basic tips and precautions in mind. [Report] Jeju’s 250 kilometers of beautiful coastline attracts millions of visitors annually ? and with the summer now upon us, it’s definitely the best time for a cool dip in the ocean. But behind the beauty of Jungmun Saekdal Beach, for example, with its famed southern waves that surfers flock to, or the wide, family friendly seashore at Iho, not far from Jeju City, we can’t forget that this marine environment presents a certain amount of risk. So, here are a few tips to keep in mind when you and your loved ones hit the island’s many beaches this summer! [Slug CG] bit.ly/jejubeachweather First off, it’s advisable to check the weather, UV levels, and tides by consulting the Korea Meteorological Administration’s website. There is detailed information (in Korean) on 17 Jeju beaches. Bring hats, T-shirts and plenty of sunscreen to avoid the sun’s harmful rays and ensure you have plenty of drinking water to stay cool and hydrated. [Slug CG] Supervised beaches, kids’ life jackets recommended If you are out with inexperienced or younger swimmers, it’s best to stick to the supervised beaches with lifeguard stations and safety buoys, and make sure they wear life jackets in ? and around ? the sea. This is because even in shallow water a wave or current can cause you to lose your footing and find yourself in trouble. In the unlikely event that you or someone in your groups finds themselves caught in a rip tide, rule No. 1 is to stay calm. Don’t fight the current but rather swim parallel to the shore until you are out of danger. [Slug CG] Todd Thacker And finally, while Jeju has some of the most pristine ocean in Korea, rising sea temperatures have meant that poisonous species of octopus and jellyfish have appeared recently. Please avoid contact with these creatures and seek immediate medical treatment if stung. We hope you have a spectacular ? and safe ? summer! Todd Thacker KCTV

  • How to manage and use Tamna Culture Square? New group charged with coming up with plan Jeju City is responding to charges in a KCTV report that it has no utilization plan for Tamna Culture Square. The city will form a team by the end of the month composed of civil servants and local residents. The group will develop cultural programs to turn the square into a popular destination in the city. The team will also draw up a comprehensive maintenance and management plan for the square. It will include blueprints to both maintain the square itself, underground parking, and other facilities, as well as control the homeless and parking in the area. Tamna Culture Square cost 56.5 billion won to build, but critics charge the main focus of project was just construction and that officials lacked a plan for how to actually use it.
