Jeju Batdam Festival draws to close  
Event aimed to publicize importance of island’s stone walls

“Batdam” are the walls made of volcanic rock that crisscross the island, and the second Jeju Batdam Festival drew to a close Sunday under the theme of “A thousand years of batdam, carrying the life of Jeju.”

Hosted by the provincial government and sponsored by the Jeju branch of the Korea Rural Community Corporation, the event included hiking, wall building, a food contest, and other activities and attractions.

On Sunday, the second day of the festival, “batdam” experts gave a talk and argued for the establishment of an overarching management model and institutional support for the walls. They also discussed preservation measures.

Organizers say the festival was a unique opportunity to teach people about the importance of the walls, which UNESCO has designated a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System, and to make sure younger generations understand their influence on local life.

제2회 제주밭담축제 성황리 폐막

'천년의 밭담, 제주의 삶을 담다'를 주제로 한 제2회 제주밭담축제가 이틀 간의 모든 일정을 마치고 성황리에 폐막했습니다.

또 밭담 관련 전문가가 참여한 토크콘서트가 열려 제주형 밭담관리 모델 구축과 제도적 지원 필요성,
체계적 보존 방안을 마련하는 계기가 됐습니다.

제주밭담축제는 세계중요농업유산으로 등재된 제주밭담의 가치와 중요성을 알리고 후세에 계승하기 위해 마련됐습니다.
