Another feasibility study commissioned on underwater tunnel
167-kilometer tunnel would link Jeju with mainland city of Mokpo

Jeollanam-do is again considering the construction of an underwater tunnel linking Mokpo and Jeju.


The provincial government there commissioned the industrial-academic collaboration foundation at Seoul National University to study the feasbility of the idea.

The foundation will complete its 130-million-won assessment by next August.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport commissioned a similar study in 2010. Researchers then estimated that the tunnel would be 167 kilometers long, that it would take 16 years to build, and that it would cost nearly 17 trillion won. They concluded that the project would not be feasible.


전남도, 제주-목포 해저터널 타당성 재조사


전라남도가 제주와 목포를 잇는 해저터널 건설사업을 다시 추진합니다.


전라남도는 최근 서울대 산학협력단에 제주-서울 간 고속철도 타당성 조사 용역을 의뢰했습니다.


용역비 1억 3천 만원을 들여 내년 8월까지 제주와 목포 해저에 터널을 뚫어 제주에서 서울까지 고속철로을 연결했을 경우의 사업 타당성을 검증합니다.


제주-목포 해저터널은 167km 길이로 건설기간은 16년, 사업비는 16조 8천억 원이 들어갈 것으로 추산돼 지난 2010년 국토교통부로부터 타당성이 없는 것으로 결론났었습니다.
