Woman found guilty of drug smuggling


An American teaching assistant on the island has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison on drug charges.


Jeju District Court Judge Huh Il-seong also sentenced the 28-year-old woman to four years of probation.


The suspect, known only by the initial “K,” was found guilty of importing drugs in August through an international express mail service.


In explaining its sentence, the court said that, although international drug smuggling is a serious crime, the judge concluded that the defendant did not intend to distribute the drugs here.


In addition to receiving a shipment in August, the woman is also suspected to have bought, smoked, and possessed marijuana here in Jeju last June.

제주지방법원 제2형사부 허일승 부장판사는 지난 8월 국제특급우편으로 마약류를 밀수입한 혐의로 구소기소된 원어민 보조교사인 미국인 28살 K 여인에게 징역 2년 6월에 집행유예 4년을 선고했습니다.


법원은 국제우편을 통해 마약류를 밀반입 했다는 점에서 죄가 가볍지 않지만 국내에 유통할 목적으로 보이지 않는다며 양형이유를 설명했습니다.


K 여인은 마약류 밀반입 뿐 아니라 지난 6월에는 제주에서 대마를 구입해 흡입하고 보관해온 혐의도 드러났습니다.
