UNESCO likely to name haenyeo Intangible Cultural Heritage
Final decision to be announced November 28


Insiders say UNESCO is likely to add the culture of Jeju’s iconic women sea divers to its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.


According to the Cultural Heritage Administration, UNESCO’s assessment committee has recommended that haenyeo receive the designation.


The committee concluded that haenyeo culture reflects the cultural diversity of the local community and that it includes good examples of intangible heritage, such as rituals for safety and a good catch.


A final decision will be made at the Eleventh Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. That meeting begins November 28 in Ethiopia.

제주해녀문화의 유네스코 인류무형문화유산 등재가 사실상 확정됐습니다.


문화재청에 따르면 유네스코 무형유산위원회 평가기구는 최근 우리나라에서 신청한 제주해녀문화에 대해 ‘등재권고’ 판정을 내렸습니다.


무형유산위원회 평가기구는 제주해녀문화에 대해 지역 공동체가 지닌 문화적 다양성을 보여주고 안전과 풍어를 위한 의식 등 무형유산으로서의 가치가 높다고 평가한 것으로 전해졌습니다.


제주해녀문화의 인류무형문화유산 등재 여부는 오는 28일부터 에디오피아에서 열리는 제 11차 무형유산위원회에서 최종 결정됩니다.
