And now a couple of stories about people going over and above in support of their community. One anonymous philanthropist has been sending children on overseas trips for a decade, and a group of volunteers has made it their mission to improve the lives of the elderly. Joseph Kim reports.

Gwideok Elementary School in Hallim

This is a class room of sixth graders at an elementary school in Jeju City.

The home room teacher is informing the students on Chinese culture. The instructor is noticably excited.

So are the children.

Soon, they will all travel to China for their school trip.

In this last year of elementary school, I’m flying to China and spending time with my friends. I’m really excited.

It’s my first time to go to China with my friends. I hope to try Peking duck and visit the Great Wall of China.

"친구들과 함께 중국으로 처음 가는데 북경오리도 한번 먹어보고 싶고 만리장성도 가보고 싶어요."

Usually, 6th grade students in local elementary schools take overnight trips on the island.

But students at this school have traveled abroad every year since 2006.

An anonymous donor has fully paid for the overseas school trips for the 6th graders of the rural school since 2006.

A person in their 50s who works in the farming industry has donated the money. This benevolent individual believes that investment in children is more important than in facilities.

"(독지가는) 50대 후반의 1차 산업 종사하는 분인데 학교를 도와주는 것이 시설투자보다 인재를 키우는 것이 더 중요하다는 생각에 지금까지."

100 kg of rice donated monthly in Hwabuk 2-dong, Jeju City

A group of volunteers visits a nursing home.

The group donates 100 kilogram of rice to the facility every month.

The regular donation is a tremendous help to the elders at the nursing home, but the grandmothers and grandfathers residing there appreciate the time the guests come and spend with them.

The volunteers make the nursing home warmer.
