Spike in number of non-Koreans caught breaking the law
Special police unit vows to clamp down


The number of international visitors caught breaking the law has skyrocketed.

Since local police agency established a special unit dedicated to issues involving non-Korean tourists, the number of foreigners caught for legal violations at tourist sites has jumped by a factor of nearly 20 ? from 40 last year to 790 so far this year.

By type, jaywalking topped the list of infractions at 640. There were also about 140 misdemeanors.

The tourist police unit will beef up its crackdown on foreign violators around Baojian Street and Tamna Cultural Square.

외국인이 기초질서 위반 행위가 크게 늘고 있습니다.


제주도 자치경찰단에 따르면 올해 초에 관광경찰이 출범한 후 지금까지 주요 관광지에서 적발한 외국인 기초질서 위반건수는 790여 건으로 지난해 전체 40건보다 19배 증가했습니다.


유형별로는 무단횡단이 640여 건으로 가장 많았고 경범죄 140여 건 등입니다.


자치경찰은 바오젠거리와 탐라문화광장 등에서 외국인 기초질서 위반사범에 대한 단속을 강화할 방침입니다.
