A local researcher says that an altar in the form of the Big Dipper constellation and used in rituals during the Tamna period provides invaluable insights into the ancient kingdom.


During a Thursday seminar held in Jeju City’s Venture Maru building, the director of the Research Center for Hallasan Ecology and Culture’s director argued that “Chilseongdae” was a historic cultural relic. (강문규) Kang Mun-gu said that the altar had been built in the fourth or fifth century BCE and that it had been used as late as the 1930s.

He added that it provided clues to the secrets of what life used to be like here on the island.

강문규 한라산생태문화연구소장은 오늘(3일) 제주시 벤처마루 세미나실에서 열린
별의 도시 제주를 위한 탐라별 문화 학술세미나에서 칠성대는 탐라의 개국시기라고 할 수 있는 기원후 4~5세기경 축조된 이래 최소한 1930년대까지 전해져 온 역사문화유적이라며 이를 통해 탐라가 어떤 형태를 갖추며 개국했는지 가늠할 수 있다고 말했습니다.
