Lee Seok-mun blames students’ eating habits for small meals


The superintendent of education is stirring controversy after naming student’s eating habits as the reason one local school was serving substandard meals.


Lee Seok-mun made the comments during a Monday meeting at the Provincial Office of Education. In response to claims that school meals at the Jeju City elementary school were too small, Lee said the main problem was the picky eating habits of the students.


He stressed the need to instill proper eating habits and requested that children be taught them.


Critics say the excuse is weak, considering the office’s initial lack of response to the issue. They also argue Lee offered no way to improve the monitoring of school meals.

하지만 이 교육감의 발언을 놓고 오랜 기간 학부모들의 식단 개선 요구에 무대응으로 일관한 학교나 형식적인 모니터링 제도 운영에 대한 개선 대책은 빠졌다는 지적이 나오고 있습니다.
