Tokkiseom Island waters likely to gain protection
Final decision by end of year


The central government is expected to designate the waters around Tokkiseon Island in Gujwa-eup a marine protection zone.


Provincial officials say the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries will discuss the matter with the Ministry of Environment, then hold a briefing session for residents before finalizing the decision by the end of December.


The zone would be 0.3 square kilometers of waters around the island, which sits just off the coast of Hado-ri.


The islet is home to the crinum lily, which the national government has designated Natural Monument number 19. The waters around the islet are also very important because they are a habitat for large numbers of protected marine plants.


If designated a marine protection zone, the area will benefit from national funding for preservation and state-level protection efforts.

제주시 구좌읍 토끼 섬 주변 해역이 정부의 해양보호구역으로 지정될 전망입니다.


제주도에 따르면 해양수산부는 환경부 협의와 주민설명회 등을 거쳐 다음 달 안으로 구좌읍 하도리 토끼섬 주변 해역 0.3 제곱킬로미터를 해양보호구역으로 지정 고시할 방침입니다.


토끼 섬은 천연기념물 19호인 문주란 자생지로, 주변 해역은 보호대상 해양생물들이 대규모로 서식하고 있어 해양 생태학적 가치가 높은 곳으로 평가받고 있습니다.


해양보호구역으로 지정되면 정부 보호계획 수립과 예산이 지원돼 국가차원에서 보호관리가 이뤄집니다.
