Plan to build Jeju Design Center falls through
Province to return \900m to Seoul
The provincial government is expected to scrap its plan to build a Jeju Design Center.
The province says the main problems were a lack of funding and a failure to secure a suitable location.
It will now return the roughly 900 million won it received in national funding for the construction.
The proposed Jeju Design Center was planned for inside the Citizen Welfare Town on the 10,000-square-meter plot that had been set aside for a new Jeju City Hall. It was expected to cost 20 billion won to build the 4,000-square-meter building.
The center was initially planned to be operated by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion. Jeju later changed its would-be status into a foundation run by the local government, and that led critics to question its profitability.
