More foreigners caught trying to make illegal trip to mainland
Visa not needed for Jeju, but required for rest of country
Authorities are catching a rising number of non-Koreans for attempting to take advantage of Jeju’s visa waiver program in order to stay in the country illegally.
Airport officials say they had caught 74 foreigners through the end of October this year for trying to make it to the mainland, where a visa is required. That’s more than double the 36 who were apprehended during the January-to-October period in 2015.
Airport police plan to increase the number of checkpoints for foreigners at the airport and introduce a new automated passport scanning system that can detect forged travel documents.
