Seonheul-ri, Jocheon-eup
Nestled next to Geomun Oreum in Seonheul-ri (선흘리), Jeju City, is a research and conservation center dedicated to educating the public about some of the island’s world-renowned ecological marvels.
The Jeju World Natural Heritage Center was completed in 2012 and functions as a base of operations for the preservation and management of Jeju Island’s three UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites -- the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, Hallasan National Park and Seongsan Sunrise Peak.
The center’s flowing lines and modern architecture are unique, much like what it has on offer in its permanent exhibition.

Seven halls detail a wealth of facts, figures
Seven halls present a wealth of interesting facts, illustrations and dioramas detailing Jeju’s formation, its plant and animal life, and forest and marine ecosystems.
It also has a 4D theater, which presents a 21-minute film featuring such locations as Jeongbang Waterfall, Baekrokdam Crater at the top of Halla Mountain, Manjanggul Cave and more. And since it’s 4D, not only is it stereoscopic, it brings a roller-coaster ride element to the theater experience.

Reservations required for hiking
And if you’d like to explore this popular volcanic cone yourself, you can do so from the center. However, you’ll have to plan ahead as reservations are required. Entrance to Geomun Oreum is limited to 400 visitors daily.

All in all, the center and Geomun Oreum are an excellent place for ecotourists, families and friends to learn about Jeju’s fascinating, and beautiful, natural heritage.
