Jeju City to expand zones set aside for elderly ‘haenyeo’
85% of island’s female sea divers at least 60 years old


The vast majority of Jeju’s female sea divers are at least 60 years old, so Jeju City is expanding the areas set aside specifically for them to work in as part of efforts to increase their income and give them a safer place to work.


The city has announced it will spend 42 million won this year on such a zone in the waters off the village of Gonae in Aewol-eup. The entire two-hectare site will be less than five meters deep, to make work easier for senior haenyeo.


Next year, the city will spend 150 million won to build similar zones near the fishing villages of Hamdeok, Jongdal and (오봉) Obong.


There are roughly 4,300 haenyeo working in Jeju. 85 percent of them are at least 60 years old.

고령해녀들의 안전조업과 소득향상을 위한 할망바당이 확대 조성됩니다.


제주시는 올해 애월읍 고내어촌계에 사업비 4천 200만원을 들여 수심 5m 이내의 마을어장 2ha에 투석과 종묘를 방류하는 할망바당을 조성한다고 밝혔습니다.


내년에는 함덕과 종달, 오봉어촌계 3곳에 1억5천만원을 투입해 할망바당을 추가 조성합니다.


제주도내에서 활동하는 해녀는 모두 4천300여 명으로 이 가운데 85%가 60대 이상인 고령입니다.
