Decision coming on UNESCO designation of haenyeo culture
To be announced at meeting underway in Ethiopia


We will know very soon whether UNESCO will designate the island’s unique haenyeo culture as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.


Provincial officials are expecting a final decision on the matter around 11 p.m. local time on Wednesday. It will be announced at the 11th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is underway in Ethiopia.


There’s a feeling of guarded optimism here in Korea because a UNESCO assessment body is reported to have recommended that the island’s women sea divers be granted the designation.


Governor Won Heeryong, a haenyeo representative, and other government officials are currently in Ethiopia promoting the haenyeo culture.


If successful, this will be the 19th facet of Korean culture to gain the UNESCO designation.

제주특별자치도는 우리 시각으로 내일 밤 11시를 전후해 아프리카 에티오피아에서 열리고 있는 무형문화유산 보호 정부간위원회에서 제주해녀문화의 무형문화유산 등재여부가 결정될 것으로 예상하고 있습니다.


지난달 유네스코 무형문화유산위원회 산하평가기구에서 등재권고 판정을 받은 만큼 등재가 유력한 상황입니다.


제주도는 원희룡 지사와 해녀 대표, 정부 관계자 등이 현지에서 해녀문화의 우수성을 알리는 홍보활동을 펼치고 있습니다.
