‘Deep dissatisfaction over state-authored history textbook’
Provincial government sends official statement to Seoul


The provincial government has lodged an official statement of “deep dissatisfaction” with Seoul regarding a revised state-authored history textbook that allegedly downplays the Jeju April Third Incident.


This comes as opposition to the textbook grows.


In its statement, the province argued the revisions lack a balanced description of the cause of the incident, saying the textbook does not say the victims lost their lives and livelihoods because of national-level abuse of power and the resulting efforts in Jeju to resolve the situation.


The province also stressed the need for the history text to include information on both the reasoning behind the national government’s establishment in the year 2000 of the April Third Special Law and the contents of the April Third Incident fact-finding report that Seoul officially recognized. Local officials added that the province would do everything within its power to ensure all Korean citizens learned the historical truth.

최근 교육부가 공개한 국정 역사교과서 검토본에 제주 4.3 사건이 축소 서술됐다는 논란이 커지는 가운데
제주도가 공식적으로 유감을 표명했습니다.


제주도는 이번 국정 역사교과서의 경우 4.3 사건 원인에 대한 균형적인 서술이 부족하고 4.3희생자가 국가 권력 남용에서 발생했다는 사실과 4.3 해결을 위한 도민들의 노력 등이 내용에 들어 있지 않았다며
미흡한 서술에 대해 깊은 유감의 뜻을 밝혔습니다.


특히 교과서에는 지난 2천년 제정된 4.3 특별법의 정신과 정부에서 공식 채택한 제주4.3사건 진상조사보고서 내용들이 충분히 반영돼야 한다며 국민들이 올바른 역사를 배울 수 있도록 모든 노력을 다하겠다고 강조했습니다.
