‘We welcome UNESCO’s designation of haenyeo’
Council speaker releases statement on Thursday


The provincial council has welcomed UNESCO’s recognition of the culture of the island’s unique female sea divers.


Council speaker Shin Gwang-hong released a message Thursday after UNESCO named the “haenyeo” culture an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.


He pointed out that this was the second aspect of local culture to make it onto the list - the first being the Chilmeoridang Yeongdeunggut, and expressed his joy at the designation on behalf of all Jeju residents.


Shin also stressed the need to gather what he labeled the “wisdom” needed to further boost Jeju’s value through the female divers.

제주해녀문화의 유네스코 인류무형문화유산 등재와 관련해 제주도의회가 환영의 뜻을 밝혔습니다.


제주도의회 신관홍 의장은 오늘(1일) 제주해녀 유네스코 등재 환영메시지를 발표하고 제주는 제주칠머리당영등굿에 이어 두번째로 유네스코 무형문화유산에 등재되는 기쁨을 누리게 됐다며
온 도민과 더불어 경하한다고 밝혔습니다.


그러면서 앞으로 제주해녀를 통해 제주의 가치를 한 차원 더 끌어올릴 수 있도록 지혜를 모아나가야 한다고 강조했습니다.
