Island Investigations on Club Drugs Last month, a drug trafficking and distribution network involved in selling drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine in karaoke bars and foreigner-exclusive clubs in South (경상) Gyeongsang Province was apprehended by the Coast Guard. Amidst a series of drug crimes occurring in clubs and bars nationwide, a similar drug offender has been arrested in Jeju as well. A man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was formerly affiliated with a club, has been arrested last month on suspicion of possessing dozens of Ecstasy pills and consuming them. Jeju District Prosecutor's Office has indicted Mr. A on charges of drug possession and consumption, and they have also announced that they are conducting supplementary investigations into individuals who were involved in drug consumption with him. Ecstasy, a new type of drug, is known as a "club drug" as it is primarily consumed by young people. It has a hallucinogenic effect that is three times stronger than that of methamphetamine. INTERVIEW Jo Gwang-won / Jeju Office, Korean Society of Drug Abuse Ecstasy is known to produce hallucinogenic effects that can induce a significant elevation in mood. It is indeed a drug that is commonly used by young people. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has stated that this case is unrelated to clubs, and it is difficult to disclose specific details regarding the case, including the specific charges, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to the Korea Customs Service, the amount of newly identified drugs seized last year was 260 kg, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to two years ago. Among them, the quantity of Ecstasy seizures increased by seven times during the same period. With the recent arrest of an Ecstasy drug offender in Jeju, there is growing interest in whether the crimes are linked to related industries, as seen in nationwide cases, rather than being isolated incidents of individual crimes. The investigation results regarding any potential spread of crime to associated sectors have garnered significant attention.

  • Film Focus
  • It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters. [Report] For the first time in some time there are two new action flicks hitting theatres this weekend. What better way to stave off the encroaching winter cold just a bit longer than by seeing some heat up on the big screen. Today, watch Tom Cruise do his thing in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and yes, the vampires are still at war in Underworld: Blood Wars. [Slug CG] Mike Laidman Welcome to another edition of Film Focus. I’m Mike Laidman. [Slug CG] Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016, Edward Zwick) Jack Reacher must uncover the truth and clear his name. While 2012’s Jack Reacher was an above-average crime thriller featuring Tom Cruise doing what he does best, the 2016 follow-up, Never Go Back, just doesn’t hit its stride like the original did. Based on the book by author Lee Child, we follow Reacher as he fights to clear his name and uncover the truth behind a major government conspiracy. On the run as a fugitive from the law, Reacher uncovers a potential secret from his past that could change his life forever. Sounds pretty formulaic, doesn’t it? Well, that’s because it most definitely is. Everything here has been seen before, hundreds of times even. The movie tries to break out of some of the crime thriller stereotypes, but mostly fails to, barely meeting expectations, whereas its predecessor at least surpassed a few. Nevertheless, fans of the genre, the previous film, and of Cruise in full-on action mode will undoubtedly find something to enjoy here. [Slug CG] Underworld: Blood Wars (2016, Anna Foerster) Selene fights to end the war between the Lycans and Vampires. Blood Wars is the next installment in the Underworld franchise, and follows Vampire killer Selene as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. Alongside her only allies, she must stop the eternal war between the two, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice. As the fifth film in the series, there aren’t going to be many new converts, but if you’ve been watching since the original Underworld in 2003, chances are you’ll want to stick with the characters and see the story through to its next part. The movie is brutal, fast action, with dialogue serving a fairly heavy expository role as it moves from action scene to action scene, leaving a trail of undead bodies in its wake. While neither of this week’s films are award-winners, they do offer some semi-solid entertainment that will let your mind wander for a good couple of hours.

  • 500k tons of outdoor-grown mandarins expected
  • 500k tons of outdoor-grown mandarins expected Highest average sweetness in five years This year’s crop of outdoor-grown mandarin oranges is expected to tip the scales at nearly 500 thousand tons. Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services’s survey committee estimates a harvest of 499,000 tons, based on observations over the past three months. The latest prediction is about 50,000 tons less than the estimate made in August. The committee said that this year’s citrus is the sweetest in five years, with an average sugar content of 11.8 degrees Brix, but due to typhoons and other climate conditions only 70 percent of the fruit will be marketable. That’s down from last year, when 75 percent of the fruit was suitable for sale.

  • KCTV: Invasive Broadleaf Bamboo
  • Broadleaf bamboo is spreading like wildfire on Hallasan Mountain. Researchers say it now covers some 21 square kilometers, and they’re still working on the best way to contain it. Minhoe Kim reports. Report [slug] Broadleaf bamboo took over mountain after grazing was banned Knee-high broadleaf bamboo covers the Eorimok area of Hallasan Mountain. Years ago, cows and horses used to graze on the plant, but when animal grazing in national parks was banned 30 years ago, the bamboo quickly spread to cover the mountain. Researchers have now presented figures on just how much of the mountain is covered by this plant for the first time. Researchers took aerial photos of 21 square kilometers of land 1,400 meters above sea level along the Hallasan Mountain preservation zone. Analyzing the photos, they found that 88 percent of the land, or 19 square kilometers, has been covered by broadleaf bamboo. This is equivalent to more than 2,600 soccer fields. The study also revealed that the growth of the bamboo - which is mostly horizontal - is impeding the growth of other plants. Interview Hyeon Jin-o / Head, Northeast Biodiversity Institute The royal azaleas aren’t doing well. We have proven that the broadleaf bamboo has severely damaged shrubs like the azalea and royal azalea on Hallasan’s slopes. Broadleaf bamboo does prevent soil loss, but if the species spreads at its current rate, the whole mountain will soon be covered with the plant - killing plenty of other species as it moves. [slug] Animal grazing, trimming are effective To try and contain the spread of the bamboo, authorities temporarily allowed horses to graze and hired workers to cut the fast-growing plant. While effective, specialists have pointed out that the animals could cause soil loss and that cutting could affect other plants in a negative way. Interview Jeong Se-ho / Jeju World Natural Heritage Center We will keep studying to determine which method of control is more effective - animal grazing or trimming. [Reporter] Minhoe Kim [Camera] Kim Yong-min The province will continue to look at the effectiveness of both grazing and cutting control methods through next year. Minhoe Kim, KCTV
