‘More education tying Jeju’s identity to haenyeo culture’
Ed. superintendent promises changes in wake of UNESCO designation


Following the announcement of UNESCO’s designation, the island’s superintendent of education said his office would work harder on education designed to tie Jeju’s identity to the haenyeo culture.


In a press release, Lee Seok-mun said he hoped the designation would be a ray of sunlight for the divers, who often lead difficult lives… and that it would lead to the preservation of the unique aspect of local culture.


Lee added that he would work on a number of fronts to ensure that the wider world knows that the diving women symbolize the island.

유네스코가 '제주해녀문화'를 인류 무형문화 유산으로 최종 등재한 가운데 이석문 제주도교육감은
해녀를 중심으로 제주 정체성 교육을 강화하겠다고 밝혔습니다.


이 교육감은 보도자료를 통해 이번 등재가 해녀들의 고된 삶을 따뜻하게 비추는 지속가능한 보존과 계승의 햇살이 되길 바란다고 전했습니다.


그러면서 제주 해녀가 제주를 대표하는 정체성으로 세계인들에게 각인되도록 다양한 교육을 펼치겠다고 덧붙였습니다.
