Police uncover TOEIC, TOEFL fraud
Suspect allegedly took 40+ tests on behalf of paying clients

Provincial police have arrested a thirty-year-old man for taking English language proficiency exams in lieu of the actual test-takers.


The suspect, surnamed Lee, allegedly took the TOEIC and TOEFL tests more than 40 times on behalf of the people who hired him.


Police also indicted without detention 37 of his clients.


Investigators say Lee, who had studied abroad, advertised his services via smartphone and on social media, and that the scam started in February 2014 and ran until recently.


According to police, Lee used forged ID cards to gain entrance to the testing venues. If his client was a woman, he would take the test at the same time and location and transmit the answers to her via radio.


He charged between 1.3 million to 6 million won per client.

제주지방경찰청은 지난 2014년 2월부터 최근까지 스마트폰 SNS 광고글을 통해
토익과 토플 등 외국어능력시험 부정응시자를 모집하고 40차례 넘게 대리시험 등을 통해 부정을 일삼아 온 30살 이 모씨를 구속하고 부정응시를 의뢰한 37명을 불구속 입건했습니다.


경찰에 따르면 해외 유학생 출신인 이 씨는 외국어시험 부정응시자 한 명당 130만 원에서 많게는 600만 원씩을 받으며 주민등록증을 위조하는 방식으로 대리시험을 치렀습니다.


특히 부정시험 의뢰자가 여자인 경우 무전기를 지닌채 같이 시험장에 들어가 답안을 알려줬던 것으로 경찰조사 결과 드러났습니다.
