Ed. minister apologizes for ‘unbalanced’ history textbook
Critics say book does not properly describe April Third Incident


The Ministry of Education has apologized for a new state-authored Korean history textbook that critics say lacks a balanced description of the Jeju April Third Incident.


Minister (이준식) Lee Joon-sik also opened the door to revising the book.


According to organizations of incident victims’ relatives and National Assembly member (오영훈) Oh Younghun, Lee said during a Tuesday meeting that he was sorry for failing to meet the expectations of the relatives, and Jeju residents in general, regarding the content of the textbook.


The current draft of the book can be revised. The minister said he would pass along the suggestions and opinions of the relatives to the writing staff and the National Institute of Korean History.

최근 공개된 국정 교과서가 제주4.3을 왜곡, 축소 기술했다는 지적을 받고 있는 가운데 이준식 교육부 장관이 이에 대해 사과하고 수정 가능성을 열어뒀습니다.


제주4.3유족회와 오영훈 국회의원에 따르면, 이준식 장관은 오늘(13일) 유족회 등과 간담회를 가진 자리에 제주도민과 유족회에 교과서 내용으로 실망을 드려 죄송하다고 말했습니다.


이 장관은 이어 현장 검토본은 앞으로 보완, 수정이 가능하다며 국사편찬위원회와 집필진에 유족회 의견이 반영될 수 있게 노력하겠다고 말한 것으로 전해졌습니다.
