The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy has chosen the Jeju Science Park as the site for the national academic-industrial complex.

24 billion won of combined national and local money will be spent on the project over five years, resulting in about 30 research institutes and a college campus.

Jeju National University will request approval to buy land for a campus in the Jeju Science Park. If the Ministry of Education approves it, JNU would have three campuses, including the Ara and Sara campuses.

A new workforce ready to meet the industry‘s needs will need to be hired for the new campus, and as such, will be put together in advance and then supplied to companies in the Jeju Science Park, including Kakao.
With the existing Ara and Sara campuses, the Science Park will house Jeju National University’s third campus.

Three of the university’s departments - computer science and statistics, food science and nutrition, and chemistry and cosmetics will move to the new complex, in addition to the multimedia game department of the Jeju Tourism University.

Colleges to support vocational high schools
The two universities will have on-site job training courses for students and support the curriculum at specialized vocational high schools.
And about 30 IT and BT companies will have R&D institutes located in the academic-industrial complex.

The island hopes that the IT and BT academic-industrial complex will be an example for other national academic-industrial complexes that bring in a ready workforce and help to create new jobs.
