Foreigner landowners sell in 2016
First decrease since 2002 in amount of local land owned by non-Koreans

The amount of local land owned by non-Koreans began to shrink in the first half of this year, the first time that’s happened since 2002.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, the total fell by 220,000 square meters to 20 million 370 thousand square meters. That’s 1.1 percent of Jeju’s land area.

Analysts say there are several reasons for the decrease, with the main one being the discontinuation of work on the Yerae resort-type residential complex. That led to foreigners selling 330,000 square meters of land. Weaker investment in new development projects is also a factor.

Chinese own the most local land of any one nationality, at more than 850,000 square meters. Next is American investors, who control roughly 370,000 square meters, and then Japanese, at about 240,000.

제주 외국인 소유 토지 22만㎡ 감소

올해 상반기 제주도내 외국인 소유 토지면적이 2002년 통계 이후 처음 감소했습니다.

국토교통부에 따르면 올해 상반기 도내 외국인 보유토지는 전체면적의 1.1%인 2천37만㎡로 지난해에 비해 22만㎡가 줄었습니다.

이는 서귀포시 예래휴양단지 조성사업 중단으로 33만㎡가 매각되고 신규 개발사업 투자가 감소했기 때문으로 분석됩니다.

국적별 제주도내 외국인 보유 토지는 중국이 853만㎡로 가장 많고 미국 368만㎡, 일본 237만㎡ 순으로 나타났습니다.
