Average temperature in Jeju City for all of 2016: 17 degrees
Highest since records began in 1961

The scorching summer heat wave propelled Jeju City’s average temperature last year to its highest point ever.

According to the Jeju branch of the Korea Meteorological Administration, the average temperature for all of 2016 in Jeju City was 17 degrees. That’s the highest since records began being kept in 1961.

As a whole, the island’s average temperature also hit 18 degrees. That’s 0.8 degrees higher than average, and the third highest on record.

The KMA says low pressure systems frequently passed over the southern part of the country last year, and that was why the mercury remained at such high levels.

지난해 여름철 폭염 등의 영향으로 제주시 연평균 기온이 가장 높았던 것으로 분석됐습니다.

제주지방기상청에 따르면 지난해 제주시 평균기온은 17도로 1961년 통계 작성 이후 가장 높은 기온을 기록했습니다.

제주도 전체 평균기온도 17도를 기록해 평년 16.2도보다 0.8도 높아 관측 이래 3번째 높은 기온을 기록했습니다.

기상청은 지난해 제주도는 우리나라 남쪽으로 지나가는 저기압의 영향을 자주 받아
연평균 기온이 상승한 것으로 분석했습니다.
