Hodgson’s bat found in Gimnyeonggul Cave
Follows similar discovery in 2008 in nearby Manjanggul Cave

Researchers say at least one Hodgson’s bat, a Korean national monument, lives in Gimnyeonggul Cave.

The Jeju World Heritage Center says one of the yellowish bats has been living in the cave since last year.

It discovered the same species in Manjanggul Cave in 2008. Researchers say this new discovery means the animals have expanded their habitat to include Gimnyeonggul Cave, which is nearby.

The Hodgson’s bat’s head and body is 4 to 6 centimeters long. The International Union of the Conservation of Nature has assessed it as being of “least concern” on its list of threatened species.

천연기념물인 붉은박쥐가 만장굴에 이어 김녕굴에서도 서식하는 것으로 확인됐습니다.

제주도 세계유산본부는 지난 2008년 만장굴에서 붉은 박쥐가 처음 발견된 이후
김녕굴에도 작년부터 붉은박쥐 1마리가 서식중인 것으로 확인됐다고 밝혔습니다.

이에따라 붉은박쥐 서식지가 만장굴과 인접한 김녕굴로 확장된 것으로 추정됩니다.

붉은박지는 몸길이가 4에서 6cm로 멸종위기 야생 생물 1급종이자 IUCN 멸종위기 관심대상으로 지정돼 있습니다.
